Brave boyos first Crusade

Friday 29th January 2010

So the new-look Crusaders have kicked-off their campaign to bring Super League to Wrexham with a brave but ultimatley unsuccessful showing against Leeds Rhinos.

The 34-6 scoreline did flatter the defending champions and was scant reward for the efforts of the men in red. Their committed performance made Leeds work hard and a snow covered Racecourse Ground also seemed to stiffle the Rhinos attack.  Brian McClennan's men only pulled away from Crusaders in the final 15 minutes of the match thanks to a spectacular try from Danny McGuire.

So what can be concluded from this Engage Super League opener in snowy Wrexham...well here's a few thoughts....

The Crusaders have recruited some 'hard headed' players with great experience who have the potential to combine into an outfit which can cause problems and be tricky opposition.

The crowd of over 10,334 shows that there is a potential market for the sport in Wrexham. If the side is successful they should keep coming back.

Lincoln Withers and Michael Witt could well form a solid half-back paring which will serve the team well.

In Brett Delaney Leeds seem to have a signed a quality player who can enhance their already potent looking squad. Rhinos fans might be forgiven for thinking excitedly about the likes of Brad Godden and Richie Blackmore.

Greg Eastwood likes to off-load in the tackle and could also be a dangerous attacking weapon.

So there is a few things to mull over.

All eyes will now be on the DW Stadium next Friday as the Crusaders travel to face Wigan Warriors. Can they build on this brave opening night?
