My Profile

JOHN Huxley is still riding the rugby league roller coaster after more than 40 years.

An enthusiastic amateur player and pathetic student referee back in the 1960s, he became a rugby league journalist and then administrator.

Still marked by his experience as a Swinton Lions fan, John cut his journalistic teeth in the press boxes at the Lions’ former home Station Road and The Willows in Salford.

Then trailed his pen through such rugby league centres of excellence as Oldham and Huddersfield becoming the league columnist to the Sunday Mirror in 1977.

John wrote that column until 1999. During that time he became a freelance journalist. His commissions including following Great Britain on tour to Australia in 1992; spending four years as editor of the ‘Rugby Leaguer’ newspaper, writing at least two books about the history of the Challenge Cup and contributing to the last edition of the ‘Encyclopaedia of Rugby League’.

In February 1999 he joined the RFL as a Media Manager and left the headquarters staff in November 2006 and today he’s Media Manager with Co-operative Championship One club, Keighley Cougars.

During all those years he has followed the sport through England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Australia and the United States.

Now he has become a founding correspondent with rugbyleague.com
