Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have publicly confirmed their support to a regional campaign for former player and Rugby League Hall of Fame member Neil Fox MBE to be considered for Freemanship of the City of Wakefield.

In a statement the club say they believe that very few people deserve to receive such recognition from the City fathers more than Fox who, besides being "a distinguished servant to the Wakefield Trinity club, has become one of the icons of the modern game of the professional Rugby League".

Fox played as a professional in four decades; represented his country and achieved a world record of 6,220 points in a career.

Ted Richardson, the chairman of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, said: "During the last few weeks and months there has been a growing clamour for the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council to make Neil Fox a Freeman.

"We would hope the Council will take such suggestions very seriously and would be happy to throw our weight behind any proposal on Neil's behalf.

"Besides being a great servant to this club and the sport of Rugby League, Neil has been a model citizen who has always represented the City of Wakefield with great distinction."
